Second Year at IMPERIAL COLLEGE 1954-5
Injured ankle at very beginning of season, probably temporarily dislocated, due to deliberate foul in line out against Borough Road for City and Guilds. He trod on my foot to ensure it could not move before pushing me over sideways. I was expecting a first game for London University but played very little until the end of the season.
I therefore took up boxing to keep fit and beat the first eight Norwegian rower Herman Ramsden at light heavy weight. Mines won the inter college contest by having far more entries than Guild and only three from RCS.
Imperial College lost the London University cup for the first time in five years, but I was playing again to join in a consolatory win in the London University Sevens we beat King's with ease in the Final led by Keith Pontin who was the first choice scrum half for Harlequins, he and I scored tries in the second half.
During the Easter break IC toured Cornwall with a weakened team. We were two short at the outset so I had to send for Dougie Thompson, then on leave from the army, to make up the number. He was well up to our standard of course but he responsible for one of the two who missed tries by deciding not to dive for the line at Redruth because the grass was full of coke clinker. We should have won against what was then Cornwall's strongest side. In fact we lost all two games narrowly against Falmouth and Penryn but were worn out and well beaten in the heat by Cambourne.
Also
at Easter I toured East Wales with Rugby Lions with myself and Robinson
being a reserve second row replacing the normal pair Rugby schoolmaster
and captain Tikka Vivian and Booker. We stayed in Newport at the same
time as London Welsh and lost narrowly to Newbridge and Abertillery.
Imperial College Rugby Dinner 1954-5
Summer term swimming at the Serpentine
Sports Day at Motspur Park

Never an athlete but I could tug in winning team we once practised in Hyde Park and held up the traffic on Kensington High Street as we tugged our way slowly across at the traffic lights.
I signed on for a months work experience with Standard Radio Fabrik in Sodertelje near Stockholm Sweden but spent the month before hitch hiking and hostelling around Norway and Finland returning to Sweden by ferry from Turku.
